A few fun things
I just ordered the following books (used) from Amazon.
1. I recommended this book to a few of the word nerd peeps last week. I marinated in it as a young girl growing up in the Philippines. I loved how it delivered what no dictionary or thesaurus did: thoughtful explanations of the precise nuances of meaning across groups of synonyms. I know when to use contempt, when to use scorn, and when to use disdain because of this book. I left my copy in Manila when I moved to the U.S. over fifteen years ago; I still miss it. I can't wait to read it out loud to Mr. IG at bedtime. w00t!
2. The next book I ordered as a present for Mr. IG. He's a huge Speed Racer fan and has managed to get me sort of interested too. I think Speed himself is a bit of a tool, but Racer X sure is hot. :-)
3. A Vox friend mentioned this book to me today. Sounds like a must read for anyone who cares about the deeply scary stuff going down in the U.S. today. If you haven't yet seen the vid of the author's talk about the book, I recommend it. Check out this interview as well.
4. Finally. I may be literally the last person in the English-speaking world to read Deathly Hallows, but yes, the time has come. I'm actually looking forward to this. Val will be so proud.
It makes me happy just to know that the books are on their way. :-)

My pooter took a powder in the middle of Naomi Wolf's presentation so I'm going back to it. I'm pretty sure I heard her in some NPR interview (I listen in the car and I'm always driving someplace it seems). That's a liberry book for sure!
The synonym book looks great! I have a hard time figuring out which words to use so I default to "thingie" most of the time.
I never watched Speed Racer because my mother hated it. She kept complaining that these kids didn't have any parents or something or other. Sounds like I didn't miss much! Ha!
RE: cartoons with no parents - I personally hated Scooby Doo because they never gave you all the clues you needed to solve the day's mystery. Fuckers.
Hooray! I am starting on my 6th time through HP.
Not wacky or anything, though.
I've never read a HP book or seen a movie either.
I like that synonym book. Will you bring it to the Amy'Zon Academy for Etiquette and Shit for me to peruse?
Are you serious?! That is so cool. I kind of wish I could claim that...
And I will share choice snippets from the synonym book with y'all one way or another, I promise.
Me three, though I saw about 10 minutes of one of the movies back in December, on TV.
